T.J. Newton: Log #3 — Connection
Newton seeks asylum within himself. His self-made world is his refuge. His pursuit of self-perfection to complete himself, ironically incompletes him. His self-objectification and devaluation are a symptom of his self-martyring. He self-martyrs and self-sacrifices to find worth within others’ approval. Pleases others at expense of himself.
He needs connection—mutual love with another. But alienation becomes his humanization. His defense turns into his comfort. Avoidance overtakes his purpose. A spacewalk can strengthen his character—he can grow in courage to trust others. To know to reach out to others.
It’s man’s attempt to love God, while avoiding that God loves him with grace.
